an old joke: a man repeatedly…

Old joke: A man repeatedly rides a bike across the Mexican-U.S. border. Each time, he’s stopped by Customs and the bike is taken apart. Nothing is found. Finally, one day a Customs official offers the man immunity from prosecution if only he will tell what he’s smuggling. The man pauses for a second, shrugs and says, “Bicycles.”

Greed in Art

Paraphrased from Foxnews compilation:

A University of Iowa student hand-sewed a work of art entitled “The American Flag.” It was made of 130 dollar bills sewn together and colored to resemble the American flag. He had constructed the piece to represent the greed that underlies the United States. His piece of art was displayed Saturday in the University of Iowa Art Building. It was then stolen between 9pm and midnight Wednesday according to the University police. The student artist, Curtis William Readel had this to say: “My whole show is about greed and how it can take over anyone, and just having this piece stolen further proves the point.”

Readel hung this statement up in place of the missing artwork:
“This extreme desire for wealth drives individuals to steal something that was laboriously assembled and then displayed to encourage awareness of greed. I find this ironic and very sad that someone would do this in the presence of such a statement.”

Scrambled word mistake

Someone came to my website searching for “monlita.” (I assume he/she means Minolta, as in Minolta digital cameras). The funny thing is that on my news page, I have a link to a site that scrambles the inside of words. It just so happens that the word scrambler had scrambed “minolta” to “monlita.” The Yahoo searchbot went to the scrambled website. I guess in a way the scramblizer acts as a safeguard in case people misspell certain words.

Russian dies after winning vodka-drinking contest

Russian dies after winning vodka-drinking contest

A vodka-drinking competition in a Russian town ended with the winner dead and the runners-up at the hospital! “The competition lasted 30, perhaps 40 minutes and the winner downed three half-litre bottles. He was taken home by taxi but died within 20 minutes,” said Roman Popov, a prosecutor pursuing the case in the town of Volgodonsk. The owner of the organizing shop was charged with manslaughter. I wonder if if the prize, 10 litres of vodka, will go to the runners-up now? I thought the United States drank a lot, but: “Russians drink the equivalent of 15 litres of pure alcohol per head annually, one of the highest rates in the world. Some experts estimate one in seven Russians is an alcoholic.”

Fish Hobbyists Warned Not to Flush Pets

On a far lighter note, Fish Hobbyists Warned Not to Flush Pets. As a precaution that children may try to flush their fish to freedom, fish conservationists warn that fish will not survive if flushed. So, the movie “Finding Nemo” is wrong about flushing fish, but they are right about at least this one thing. The main plot of the movie stems from divers capturing Nemo and then putting him in an aquarium somewhere. This practice does in fact occur, though, I believe that it is very unlikely that fish display the emotional aptitude that the fish in the movie had. “Freshwater aquariums primarily use farmed-raised species. But 20 million marine fish are harvested annually for saltwater aquariums.” So, I guess that tropical fish harvesting is a real concern, but the main concern is the methods that they use to capture the fish. “Fish hunters spike tropical waters with sodium cyanide to stun their prey, a technique that often kills other creatures and the coral reefs that sustain them, the U.N. reports.” The real problem is not what happens to the fish that are taken, but what happens to the rest of the corral reef.

“Jolly Rancer fragments everywhere”

Just heard this on MSNBC. Some teacher told her students to go out and do “random acts of kindness.” So, one student decided to buy a huge gift box, wrapped it, put a ribbon on, left a note, saying “This is a random act of kindness,” and left it stuffed into the head of a cannon that stood in front of the city council building. After the building was evacuated, and the police cordoned off the area, the the bomb team was called and they proceeded to use a robot to remove the box from the canon and blow it up with a shotgun. It was a box full of Jolly Ranchers. A direct quote from MSNBC, “Jolly Rancer fragments everywhere.”
