How Bush Did It

Exclusive: A team of NEWSWEEK reporters unveils the untold fears, secret battles and private emotions behind a historic election

For more than a year, NEWSWEEK followed the presidential campaigns of both men from the inside. Beginning in mid-2003, a team of NEWSWEEK reporters detached from the weekly magazine to devote themselves to observing, recording and shaping the narrative that follows. The reporters were granted unusual access to the staffs and families of both candidates on the understanding that the information they learned would not be made public until this Election Issue—after the votes were cast on Nov. 2.

• Introduction
• Chapter One: The Primaries
• Chapter Two: Bush’s Inner Circle
• Chapter Three: Kerry Gets Cranky
• Chapter Four: The Prison Scandal
• Chapter Five: The Bush Daughters
• Chapter Six: Swift Boats
• Chapter Seven: The Debates
• Chapter Eight: The Endgame

I haven’t gotten through all of them yet. From the three chapters that I’ve read so far, they are all professionally written and extremely interesting. They go behind-the-scenes at both the Kerry compaign and the Bush compaign.

And for further reading here’s an article from the New York Post Online Edition that elaborates on the election results: HOW W WON

IBM Blue Gene/L Supercomputer breaks speed record

BBC NEWS | Technology | Supercomputer breaks speed record

At full performace (in 2005) it is expected to be 360 teraflops. By 2006, IBM’s senior vice president of technology and manufacturing, Nick Donofrio, believes Blue Gene will be capable of petaflop computing.

Just for reference, on the day that this post was written, IBM’s stock was closed for the weekend at 93.28. I wonder how IBM’s stock will be doing in 2006?

Vote for Bush tomorrow!

November 2nd is Election Day in the United States. Remember to get out and vote. I have a bacteriology test in the morning but then I’m taking the rest of the day off to work the phone banks for the Dane County Republicans (yes, they do exist 😉 ). We’re then having a victory party to watch the voting results come in tomorrow night.

Bin Laden Endores Kerry

The New York Post reports:

November 1, 2004 — WASHINGTON – Osama bin Laden warned in his October Surprise video that he will be closely monitoring the state-by-state election returns in tomorrow’s presidential race — and will spare any state that votes against President Bush from being attacked, according to a new analysis of his statement.

The respected Middle East Media Research Institute, which monitors and translates Arabic media and Internet sites, said initial translations of a key portion of bin Laden’s video rant to the American people Friday night missed an ostentatious bid by the Saudi-born terror master to divide American voters and tilt the election towards Democratic challenger John Kerry.

MEMRI said radical Islamist commentators monitored over the Internet this past weekend also interpreted the key passage of bin Laden’s diatribe to mean that any U.S. state that votes to elect Bush on Tuesday will be considered an “enemy” and any state that votes for Kerry has “chosen to make peace with us.”

The statement in question is when bin Laden said on the tape: “Your security is up to you, and any state that does not toy with our security automatically guarantees its own security.”

That sentence followed a lengthy passage in the video in which bin Laden launches personal attacks on the president.

Are you going to vote for the same guy that Osama bin Laden would if he was an American citizen? Any idea why Bin Laden wants Kerry elected? It’s because he knows that Kerry will not pursue his friends as thoroughly as the current administration has. One by one Bush is dismantling Al Qaeda; Bin Laden knows this and is trying to do anything he can to tip the scales towards his candidate of choice: John Kerry.

NBC removes Kerry’s reference to his hidden and private military records in interview

What actually happened:

Brokaw: “Someone has analyzed the President’s military aptitude tests and yours, and concluded that he has a higher IQ than you do.”

Kerry: That’s great. More power. I don’t know how they’ve done it, because my record is not public. So I don’t know where you’re getting that from.”

What the updated transcript shows:

Brokaw: “Someone has analyzed the president’s military aptitude tests and yours, and concluded that he has a higher IQ than you do.”

Kerry: “That’s great. More power. I don’t know how they’ve done it.”

So Kerry hadn’t released all his military records as he said he had.

New Blog!

I’ve successfully switched over from Blogger (which I still use for my photo blog through flickr) to WordPress. I initially had some trouble getting the permalinks to work right but I think it’s all good now. As soon as I get some more time I’ll update the template to something a bit more flashy. But now, back to bacteriology studying.
