BBC News photo collection showing previously unknown cache of papers related to Anne Frank, one of the most famous victims of the Holocaust. The documents note that her family tried to have her emigrate to the United States, but was unable to obtain a visa because of the difficulty of traveling from Amsterdam to an American Consul in Portugal, Spain, Free France, or Switzerland during the Nazi occupation of Europe.
Some scientists now say that cosmic rays are linked to global warming. Maybe human action isn’t the only (or even major) contributor to global warming…
Researchers studying global warming have often been confounded by the differences between observed increases in surface-level temperatures and unchanging low-atmosphere temperatures. Because of this discrepancy, some have argued that global warming is unproven, suggesting instead that true warming should show uniformly elevated temperatures from the surface through the atmosphere. Researchers have proposed a theory that changes in cloud cover could help explain the puzzling phenomenon, but none-until now-have come up with an argument that could account for the varying heat profiles.
A study in the July 2002 issue of Journal of Geophysical Research-Space Physics, published by the American Geophysical Union, proposes for the first time that interstellar cosmic rays could be the missing link between the discordant temperatures observed during the last two decades (since recorded satellite records began in 1979). The report, by Fangqun Yu of the State University of New York-Albany, proposes that the rays, tiny charged particles that bombard all planets with varying frequency depending on solar wind intensity, may have height-dependent effects on our planet’s cloudiness. Previous research has proposed a link between cosmic rays and cloud cover, has not suggested the altitude dependence of the current study.
“A systematic change in global cloud cover will change the atmospheric heating profile,” Yu said. “In other words, the cosmic ray-induced global cloud changes could be the long-sought mechanism connecting solar and climate variability.”

Twenty years ago, climate research became politicised in favour of one particular hypothesis, which redefined the subject as the study of the effect of greenhouse gases. As a result, the rebellious spirits essential for innovative and trustworthy science are greeted with impediments to their research careers. And while the media usually find mavericks at least entertaining, in this case they often imagine that anyone who doubts the hypothesis of man-made global warming must be in the pay of the oil companies. As a result, some key discoveries in climate research go almost unreported.
Enthusiasm for the global-warming scare also ensures that heatwaves make headlines, while contrary symptoms, such as this winter’s billion-dollar loss of Californian crops to unusual frost, are relegated to the business pages. The early arrival of migrant birds in spring provides colourful evidence for a recent warming of the northern lands. But did anyone tell you that in east Antarctica the Adélie penguins and Cape petrels are turning up at their spring nesting sites around nine days later than they did 50 years ago? While sea-ice has diminished in the Arctic since 1978, it has grown by 8% in the Southern Ocean.
So one awkward question you can ask, when you’re forking out those extra taxes for climate change, is “Why is east Antarctica getting colder?†It makes no sense at all if carbon dioxide is driving global warming. While you’re at it, you might inquire whether Gordon Brown will give you a refund if it’s confirmed that global warming has stopped. The best measurements of global air temperatures come from American weather satellites, and they show wobbles but no overall change since 1999.
That levelling off is just what is expected by the chief rival hypothesis, which says that the sun drives climate changes more emphatically than greenhouse gases do. After becoming much more active during the 20th century, the sun now stands at a high but roughly level state of activity. Solar physicists warn of possible global cooling, should the sun revert to the lazier mood it was in during the Little Ice Age 300 years ago.

My opinion is that the Sun basically provides the means for all life on Earth. So why then shouldn’t it be considered a major contributor to global climate change?
Here’s another article called, “Don’t ruin economy over tiny temp rise,” that is interesting.
SEAN HANNITY, CO-HOST: And welcome to “Hannity & Colmes.” Thank you for being with us. I’m Sean Hannity.
And we get right to our top story tonight. Earlier today, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani filed “statement of candidacy” papers with the Federal Elections Commission. Mayor Giuliani joins us now for a “Hannity & Colmes†exclusive interview!
Should I say congratulations or condolences?
RUDY GIULIANI, FORMER MAYOR OF NEW YORK CITY: A little of both, but mostly congratulations. It’s wonderful thing to be, you know, organizing and putting together. And it’s a little — very humbling to think that running for president of the United States is — for a kid from Brooklyn, it’s quite a step.
HANNITY: You are then officially running to be the next president of the United States?
GIULIANI: Well, we still have to formally announce it and do a few more things. But this is about as close as you’re going to get. We did everything you have to do, I guess legally to do it — then you still have to make a formal announcement and do things like that
HANNITY: Are you in it to win it?
GIULIANI: Gosh, yes. I mean, that’s the only reason to do it. I mean, first thing you have to do is say to yourself, you know, what can I bring to it, what can I do that’s, you know, different or — and how can I make the country better? How can I improve it?
And I think that the experiences that I’ve had as mayor of New York City, United States attorney, all of them very, very, strongly, kind of in the executive area, where you have to have leadership, and organization, and focus, and having dealt with a city that was in really bad shape when I took over and that I had to kind of turn around, I think it gives you the background to approach it and to feel pretty comfortable that you can make a difference.
Since I haven’t updated this in awhile, I decided just to mention that my Smugmug site has been updated. Smugmug also just finished an incredible update to employ AJAX on the default style…check it out!

I borrowed this from The Onion’s stockwatch of 1/16/2007 because I thought it was so funny.
Stock in Hyperbole, Inc. soared today like a noble falcon rising above the apex of a majestic snowy mountain, and will, by all reports, climb higher than any stock has ever ascended before.
Here is a poem that I wrote for my 8th grade Language Arts class in, I think, 1997. It was mailed to me by my 8th grade teacher who just recently retired. You can see that some of my rhymes and word choices were stretching a little.
What if Nature Disappeared?
What would we lose,
And who would care,
If the seasons were gone,
Never to be repaired.
But, you may ask,
How could that come to be,
The seasons have been going
For many centuries.
Hopefully they won’t cease
Because we will then lose
The beautiful qualities that
We now love to endure.
Spring is the first,
In this cycle through time,
With its glorious colors
Opening wide.
Then comes Summer,
Hot and bright,
Filling our day with
Endless sunlight.
Next arrives Fall,
On a swirl of leaves,
With cool air bringing
Riddance to all the bees.
Finally Winter follows,
Slowly at first,
Then it becomes cold
With a burst!
We just got back from a ski trip to Whistler, British Columbia. The snow was incredible! I’ve never skied powder that was so deep and fresh as I did at Whistler. Numerous people that I talked to on the slopes said that this was the best snow that they’ve had in a long time.
Here are some of my favorite photos from this trip:

Check out this incredible interview. It reads like a Clancy novel! There is some rough language, which I do not condone, but it does fit well with Mr. Kavaja’s image.
Nikola Kavaja lives in a drab, Communist-era high-rise in Belgrade, Serbia’s crumbling capital. His two-room apartment is sparsely furnished: a single mattress and dresser in one room, and a scratched-up wooden desk, a couch, and a bench press in the other. The white walls are cluttered with pictures of the people who figure most strongly in his personal iconography: General Ratko Mladic, Saint Sava, Hitler, Jimmy Carter, and a young pin-up who is his current girlfriend. Guns and old military gear provide further ornamentation. A blue thermal blanket covers the street window.
By Christopher S Stewart
Published: 10 December 2006Kavaja is 73, but he looks no older than 60. He adheres to a strict weight-training routine that gets him up every weekday before the sun. He is squarely built and muscular, with white hair cut to a military trim-line and a fighter’s mashed-up nose. Except for the fine white thread of moustache, he is cleanly shaven. In his dress, he favours black trousers, black shirts and black combat boots.
Our conversation took place over three mornings, with classical music playing softly in the background. Kavaja spoke slowly and quietly, with an air of determined precision. At times, he paused to place his hand on his forehead in search of a long-forgotten detail. As he spoke, Kavaja stared off in the distance at nothing at all, or else looked down at his booted feet.
Christopher S Stewart You were a Second World War prisoner, a Communist soldier, a CIA hitman, a hijacker, and now a fugitive on the run (among other things). Where to begin?
Nikola Kavaja Write down my name. N-I-K-O-L-A K-A-V-A-J-A. You can call me Nik.Stewart That’s a start.
Kavaja It is a long story. Do you want some schnapps?Stewart No thanks. I’m fine with water.

A Chicago-area man has been charged in an alleged plot to attack a local mall and government buildings.
Derrick Shareef was arrested Wednesday as he attempted to buy grenades and a handgun from an undercover FBI agent posing as a weapons dealer.
In September, Shareef became acquainted with a confidential witness who was cooperating with the FBI and confided to him that he wanted to commit acts of violent jihad against civilians.
On Dec. 2, Shareef and the confidential source made video tapes that included a last will and testament for each. On the video, Shareef again mentioned jihad and said, “This is a warning to those who disbelieve, that we are here for you and I am ready to give my life.”
According to the complaint filed today in Chicago, Shareef also discussed attacking local buildings on several occasions, including city hall, the federal courthouse and the shopping center.
In Chicago, U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald said, “While these are very serious charges, at no time was the public in any imminent peril as a result of the defendant’s activities.”
According to Justice Department officials, Shareef was under almost constant video surveillance in the days leading up to his arrest.
In a series of undercover records, Shareef discussed with the confidential source shooting a judge in DeKalb, Ill., and targeting government buildings in the Chicago area.

For all these high profile arrests that we hear about, I wonder how many ones remain hidden from the general public in order to maintain the secrecy of the agents involved and the techniques that they use. The article is pretty interesting but scary; I’m glad that they caught this guy!
